Block Island, Rhode Island 8-2-09

One of the many fish of that day.

Date / Time: 8/2/09 Location: Block Island, Rhode Island The Characters: Kory Kapaloski, Jeremy Cameron Weather: Mostly sunny Water Temp: Mid 60s Water Level / Tide: Low tide at noon i think Water Clarity/Quality: Slightly green, clearer outside a little off closer to stonington, ct Moon Phase: 1st quarter Fishing: It was good weather, so Jeremy was fired up to “bomb out to block”. I was a little nervous considering his small craft that we would be in. He assured me that conditions were fine and we went for it. Conditions turned out to be very mild except for a larger than normal swell. The period between the waves was long though so we would track down one wave and up the next. We were looking for signs of tuna and bonito and if they didn’t materialize we would fish bass around the island. No tunoids so we headed for the perimeter of the island. We were going to bait and switch and throw plugs to tease fish up and put the fly behind them. We didn’t have the big plug that Jeremy wanted but we threw the sluggo around to locate fish. The first spot was spotty with only a couple of bluefish and a few striper follows. Birds were sporadic but nothing definitive. We headed to the south end where all the boats were and ran into Greg Snow of snowfly charters, a friend of Jeremy’s on his way in. He had one of the “big cock” plugs and we talked him in to “loaning” it to us. The bait guys were hammering big fish all over around us in the swells just outside the breakers. Double hookups left and right for them, but we were only getting limited action. We headed back north and i spotted some fish on the surface near and outside of some rocks. We stopped and threw in the plug and immediately it was assaulted. We did the drift in on the swells in that area for hours and every time the plug was in that area it was smashed and pummeled by bass some very big. One of the many fish of that day. We managed to dial it in and hookup a bunch of good fish but never did manage to tag any of the big ones. It was awesome watching the fish anhilate the plug, they would swirl, smash, explode sometimies knocking it two feet into the air. Frequently huge packs of fish would be right on its tail. We got them to eat a big white fly and a squid pattern that i had, but later i tried a chartreuse popper but they wouldn’t close the deal with that color. It was an awesome day! We headed back in and made a lap around fisher’s island, but other than one huge explosion on the plug and a few follows nothing was happening. Great day, good fun!
