Delaware River 4/19-4/20
Date: April 19, 2008
Location: Delaware River Mainstem
The Characters: Kory K, Karl Anderson, Michael Johnson
Weather: Sunny, unseasonably warm 80
Water Temp: Low 50s
Water Level: Around 1800 cfs
Water Clarity/Quality: Clear
Hatches: Caddis
Moon Phase: Close to full
Fishing: Pounded the water with streamers and hooked one decent smallmouth that didn’t fight at all probably because of the water temp. No other fish hooked. Went and checked out the Junction Pool but too windy. Then went and checked out the Gamelands on the West Branch for the last hour of light. Threw streamers again, but nothing. Saw a couple of sporadic risers and switched over but they had shut off.
Date: 4/20/08
Location: Float from Shehawken to Buckingham
The Characters: Kory K, Karl Anderson, Michael Johnson
Weather: Cloudy with periods of occasional sun, cooler around 60 for a high
Water Temp: Low 50s
Water Level: Around 1800 cfs
Water Clarity/Quality: Clear
Moon Phase: Close to full
Hatches: Moderately sporadic Hendricksons, Small Olives (BWO or Blue Quill?) Small Dark Caddis
Fishing: Landed 1 16” or so Brown nymphing top of Jct. Pool.
Fished streamers from the boat hard landed another 21” pig that savagely attacked the fly in shallow water about a mile below the junction. Had a few other follows as I was pulling the fly out of the water to cast.
Later in the day around 4 found some bank feeders on river left in some rock studded water eating Hendricksons. Seemed as if they would take every one as their rises were erratic just like the hatch. Landed a pig right off of the bank on a Hendrickson emerger pattern on the first good drift over the fish. No pic of that fish, too bad it was as big as the first on the streamer. There were two other pigs up but after I landed this fish the first went down and I gave the second to Karl who did not get him to eat. Mike fished to another bank feeder above to no avail. We found one other pod of mid sized fish about 2 miles above the takeout and Mike got one about 16” or so on a P.A.
Good day for early in the season with water that had come down dramatically and wasn’t stable.
