I had a day and a half of fishing on our own after and then had to fly home. Dad took one more day and fished with a guide with BK from Deschutes Angler after I left. In a nutshell, fishing was tough. I am writing this a little over a month late, but want to at least document it. First morning BK and I fished after I flew up night before. We were going to camp, but ended up crashing on the floor of dad’s motel room at Imperial River Company in Maupin since it was so late and we were beat. BK and I got up early and went down and fished through a run and he had a boil I think. We met Mark (our guide) later in the morning and around 11:30. He actually had a cold which sucked because he felt like shit the whole time. I will cut to the chase, we hooked only one fish despite great conditions and being on good water at prime time for all 4 days. Dad got the one in a run that I don’t remember the name of. He got that fish at the tailout and BK had fished through there. He got it on a tip with Mark’s fly which was a leech of some sort. It ripped the shit out of him and it was great that he got one. It did end up fouled in the pectoral but whatever. It was cool to see that fish since it was the only one of the entire season I would see. We pounded Lockit on the last day and got nada, pounded everything and got nada. It was fun, but the fishing sucked. Not sure if I was overcasting or we were overcasting or what but we could not make it happen. I was going to nymph but never did. Last day after the guide trip, I saw a guy hook one on a nymph after we took out and watched him play it. Ended up nymphing at the put in in the evening and hooked one instantly on the bird of prey orange (giant caddis pupa). Battled it for a few minutes and lost it. Fished the rest of the evening for nada. Ultimately a fun trip, but tough on the ego and mentality. Hopefully in a year or a few I can circle back around and get back the mojo…
