Duchesne River Hanna June 14th, 2014

Date / Time: Saturday, June 14th, 2014 11-4 pm Location: Duchesne River Hanna. Hanna Post office access walked down and fished up a couple holes above. The Characters: Kory & Lee K Weather: Windy, mostly sunny cooler with highs in the 60s. Cold front had passed through. Water Temp: Mid 40s guess Water Level: Coming down around 115 cfs Water Clarity/Quality: Fairly clear, but slightly off color Moon Phase: Two days after full moon Best Flies: Copper bead tungsten biot stone peacock dubbing body #10-#12. 20 incher same size. Fishing: Went up for day with dad, hoping for Green Drakes after previous week seeing tons of nymphs looking ready to hatch. Unfortunately a cold front passed overnight so temps were down. Hatch never materialized although I did see a dozen or so drake duns. Actually there were a lot more PMDs than anything although fish never got up on them. Did see one rise and dad missed it on the chubby. We walked down from the post office since one other car was there thinking that would avoid anyone. We started in about a mile down below first big bends. Dad got a couple small fish right away on stone dropper then a dude showed up below us but I let him fish up and figured we would just cover water thorough rather than battle for position. He said he did well on streamers early, but not good after that. We fished our way up through and got to a pool BK and I did well on previous week but couldn’t get them so switched to nymph for a short bit and hooked a few that way on the stone. Spotted a pig in the back eddy eating nymphs but he only looked at mine and refused them, think he was keyed on pmds but I realized I didn’t have small nymph box and spooked him anyway so never found out. Worked up to a killer long pool and ended up hooking a couple of pigs on the stone working the far bank boulders super hard. First one was about 16-17, second was about 18-19 and both in killer shape ripping fighters. Dad hooked a few smaller ones and then hooked a pig at the top of the run but he was being a little lackadaisical and not staying on the fish. Fish was going ballistic trying to burrow in rocks and trees and sure enough got him snagged on a big limb and we had to break the line…bummer. Fish looked to be close to 20. After that worked up through pools and got a few more good fish in shallow edges and pockets all on the stone. Ultimately fished above the post office and ended on a pig on a far edge a few holes up. Dad said he got a good one in the first big hole. Good day overall, but not the hatch I was hoping for.
