Duchesne River Hanna June 21st, 2014
Date / Time: Saturday, June 21st, 2014 1:00-4 pm Location: Duchesne River Hanna. Access in Hanna for 40 minutes, then Hanna Post Office The Characters: Kory & Anna Weather: Breezy, mostly sunny 70s Water Temp: Mid 50s guess Water Level: Coming down around 100 cfs Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal clear Moon Phase: 2 days after first quarter Best Flies: Drake cripple parachute tie over #14 200r Fishing: Went up after hearing Matt Olson had killed it day before on drakes, couldn’t resist. Took Anna, but didn’t get there until around 1pm although Matt said the hatch was good until 3. Checked out the access at Hanna since Matt had done well there and people were at all other accesses including Zach and Aaron guiding at Post Office. Fished up through a killer pool that is right above access, but saw zero drakes only pmds and quite a few. Saw one or two random risers. Fished a drake dropper, but think it was too heavy. Ultimately got one or two eats on the drake and a couple on PMD dropper, but it wasn’t great and I saw the other angler a few holes up so headed out. Ended up back at Post Office since only one car there and Zach and Aaron had left. Ran into Jason Curry who was there with a buddy and said the drakes had been killer and ended around 1pm. I saw a riser on river right in flat below first pool though while talking to him. Eventually made some casts, but didn’t see the fish anymore. Was talking to Curry and casting and ended up sticking the fish without seeing the eat. Pretty good 16 inch fatty, good battle. After that, covered water methodically and thoroughly with drake cripple and ended up getting several pigs blind casting. Saw a few of them rise, but for the most part just fishing water. Lots of the fish in super shallow water, edges and seams. Killer few hours. Caddis progressively got thicker as afternoon progressed and a few fish started to get on them, but I had to head out around 4-5pm. Killer few hours despite being after the hatch.
