Fremont River Utah August 23rd, 2014

Date / Time: Saturday, August 23 2014 9-11 a.m. or so Location: Fremont River below hwy 24 bridge above Capitol Reef National Park The Characters: Kory & Lee K Weather: Mostly Sunny with scattered clouds. 70s Water Temp: Mid 60s guessing Water Level: Around 60 cfs at gauge near Bicknell, but that is way upstream above several diversions Water Clarity/Quality: Slightly cloudy with about 10-12 inches vis Moon Phase: 2 days before new moon Hatches: Minimal Best Flies: Beadhead stonefly nymph #14 Fishing: Headed down to explore with dad in the morning while Tammy and Anna slept. We were staying at the Broken Spur Hotel about 5 minutes away in Torrey. It had rained a lot recently including night before, but wasn’t at the time and water wasn’t muddied too much. Started throwing a leech and had one smaller one swipe at it but nothing else. Decided to walk down a ways and fish back up. Started in a clearing with a big hole and decided to go with dry and double dropper just to see if fish were around. Threw the beadhead peacock stone in front of san juan. Hooked a fish within a few casts and lost it. Hooked a few others and lost them, think I finally landed one there but don’t recall. Fish were eating the stone. Eventually landed a couple decent browns working up on the stone and took the worm off. Got some decent bows around 15-16 and browns 13-16. Kept one of the bows for dad’s dinner. Hooked fish in most likely looking spots on the stone. Never got any eats on dry. Didn’t have a ton of time and hopscotched pocketwater up and got several more. Good fun and imagine if I had walked way down and really worked it would have got some pretty big fish. Wading through the pools, found that there were serious deep spots around boulders. Sweet stretch of river.
