Green Below Fontenelle March 13, 2015

Date / Time: Friday, March 13th, 2015 Location: Green Below Fontenelle. Fished below Riff Raff area in riffles. Hit Gold’s Bar and below hay farm a bit at end of day. The Characters: KK, LK, Jason Curry Weather: Sunny, high 50s to low 60s super nice day Water Temp: Guessing high 30s. Water Level: 1330 cfs Water Clarity/Quality: Very clear Moon Phase: last quarter Hatches: N/A Best Flies: Fished bead egg exclusively Fishing: Drove up with Dad and Anna in his car to Green River with Jason Curry following. Dropped Anna off at Kat’s house for the day and headed up. We thought about fishing lower, but ended up not doing that and crossed at Farson bridge and drove up. Lower road was closed as they have been doing that for several years prior to March 15th and we were two days early. I hadn’t driven up for a while so were trying to figure out how to get in. Eventually got in below lower dodge and drove down to Riff Raff, car there so continued. Ended up stopping at island and big gravel bar below islands that are below Riff Raff where the Cuttie redds are along the bank. Approached and sure enough spawners all over the bank. Ended up fishing all through and pounded them on the egg in any area with gravel nearby. I didn’t even switch colors or try trailers, just stuck with the bigger lighter colored one I had. Dad was having a slow start at first so after I banged several, I stuck with him and helped coach him into a few and got him dialed in. Eventually got one I taped at just under 22. We ended up staying there for way too long since we kept finding more fish. Got another one at least 22 that I spotted on a redd in deeper water and worked pretty hard. That one was a sweet battle and good fish. The Deep Water PigTried a streamer for 30 minutes even a few different colors and some fish would follow but they weren’t into it so went back to the dark side. Eventually headed to car around 3pm and dad took off. One Of Jason’s PigsJason and I went down and hit side channel opposite and below hay farm take out, but didn’t see much until I spooked a bunch on high bank. He got one above that, but that was it. We worked through main river fishing fast but didn’t hit much. Should have just stayed, but light was low and it seemed off so we went up to Gold’s bar area. Fish were stacked up high in place BK and I found them year previous but I worked down through the drops from previous good fishing but it wasn’t seeming on. Didn’t fish too hard though and eventually went to top and they were stacked. Spooky though and I got one but we had to head out to meet Tammy and pick up Anna. Super good day, albeit very dirty.
