Green Below Fontenelle May 24, 2015

Date / Time: Sunday, May 24, 2015 Location: Green Below Fontenelle. Mainly up by dam, a little in Dodge Bottoms The Characters: KK solo Weather: Mostly cloudy and heavy rain showers in pm. Temps in 40s and 50s Water Temp: Guessing around 50 Water Level: 1900 cfs Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal up high, as you got further down, blown out from rain in washes and eventually even the sides Moon Phase: day before first quarter Hatches: BWOs and midges Best Flies: BWO emerger, cased caddis nymph, zebra midges, BWO beadhead barr, olive tail gold lead eye bugger Fishing: Drove up from Altamont after staying night before for Roy’s wedding. Got to river around 9 a.m. and checked out sidechannel along road below camps a mile or so down on river right. Lots of rain on way, but first several hours not raining and nice. Few risers in there, ended up getting a couple good fish on small zebra droppers since they weren’t rising consistent. Then found risers in slower lower part of channel before it meets second channel. Lots of very nice fish going decently on big midges, but picky. Stuck one nice one and lost it, they weren’t super consistent so tough. Eventually put them down without getting one. Head down and checked out dodge, fished the sidechannel below the ramp and got a few nice bows on large zebra and worm. Hit drop where channel comes in main river and saw some risers but all small fish, stuck a few small ones on nymph rig and headed up. Stopped at bridge and fish were up good right above bridge, got out and stuck a good bow and landed that and others went down. Went back up to upper sidechannel and fish were up good on BWOs, but I kept losing and missing them. Fished the upper end and found a killer fish in super shallow riffle. Got that one and it ripped, killer fish. Rain was kicking in good at this point. Worked out to main river and found risers in backeddy, but didn’t get any rain making it super difficult to see and starting to soak in. Decided to take a break and napped in car, headed back out around 6pm as rain subsided a bit. Threw streamers in water below Weeping rock campground. Stuck one on way down and eventually fished the big drop in front of the campsites in the meadow. Ended up sticking several nice fish there, losing several and landing several. All bows landed, killer fish, stuck one what looked like giant brown in far trench for a second and lost it. A couple of the bows ate the streamer as it was just hanging below me waiting for another cast. Fun day, tough weather. Camped on bluff set up late and crashed.
