Green Below Fontenelle May 31, 2015
Date / Time: Sunday, May 31, 2015 Location: Green Below Fontenelle. Float from Dam to slate creek The Characters: KK, BK. Weather: Sunny, some clouds. 70s, perfect weather. Water Temp: Guessing around 50 Water Level: 1800 cfs Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal Moon Phase: 2 days before full Hatches: BWOs, midges, some flying ants Best Flies: CDC Ant, BWO Emergers, Yellow Sally Nymph, Fishing: Day two of two day trip, was going to head home but Tammy said to stay so BK and I floated. Got on water early, one other boat in the riffles and two others launched but we never saw them again and we saw virtually nobody on the bank either. Got a couple of eats on the big dry but missed them and nada on the peacock stone dropper that was so good the day before. Got out and waded across from weeping rock and didn’t touch a fish on that or caddis behind it which was weird since I knew fish were there. BK got one finally in there and we worked down to the pod on river right in the glass below the campground. Those were up and I immediately stuck a pig on the ant that ripped, killer fish. May have got another one and BK missed a couple and finally landed one. Before we left, I spotted something in the shallows that looked like a rag and picked it up. It was a Simms shirt and when I pulled it out it was covered in sally nymphs. I hadn’t fished sally nymphs yet and we hadn’t been getting them on the dropper. Immediately put one on and moved down to the big mid river drop. Pounded them in there on that, hooked several pigs that ripped couple of real big bows in the low 20s and some others. Below that found risers on the banks and started to work them. We stuck several and worked our way down on the ant. I eventually got one in tight while BK re-rigged and it ripped out into the middle into backing. After killer fight, got it back up and it was a pig brown probably 21 or so great fish! We continued down and found more risers in sidechannels and got them good. Eventually got to the private land and there were fish up along the left edge and they immediately ate the fat albert for BK. I got one more pig on the chubby I think in the left sidechannel, may have had others don’t remember. Killer day!
