Green Below Fontenelle Saturday, October 8, 2022

Date / Time: Saturday, October 8, 9-4

Location: Green Below Fontenelle, Pioneer Trails Picnic Ground first then Farson Bridge

The Characters: KK solo

Weather: Sunny and mostly clear.

Water Temp: Guessing high 50s based on gauge, didn’t take temp

Water Level: Around 1,000 cfs release.

Water Clarity/Quality: Moderately clear at Pioneer Trails, heavy moss on drift. Mostly clear at Farson bridge, much less moss.

Moon Phase: Day before Full

Hatches: Pseudos

Best Flies: Black and olive sculpin with chartreuse eyes.

Fishing: In Park City for Tammy’s family reunion staying at timeshare. Got up early and went to Fontenelle for day with paddleboard. Stopped at Pioneer Trails and floated from the ramp through the large bend to the bluff on the hill, walked the shuttle. Heavy moss on the drift and water slightly off color. I never ended up rigging a rod with the amount of moss on the drift and due to the fact that I never saw a kokanee. This, despite this section being loaded with Kokanee at other times in the past. After paddling through, I loaded up and headed upriver.

Went to Farson bridge and there were at least half a dozen trailers and another half dozen trailer-less vehicles. Nobody was fishing nearby, so floated the big bend from 1/2 mile north of the boat ramp and bridge in the closest pull out. Pounded the first drop on the streamer for nada. Tried up and across deep, erratic, down across, all of it. May have had one, but not sure. Moved on to the next bend and boulder field as some dudes showed up on the other bank. Started above the boulders and got a big bow working it slower and erratic along the bottom. Bulldog fight initially, then some good small surging runs fun fish. Thick, heavy fish, darkened up for the winter (at least they seem to be this color later in the year).

Kept working through the boulders and slowly moving down. Got a handful of smaller of the planter cutties, but no more bigger fish. Saw a good number of risers in the slower water on pseudos, but didn’t see any big fish up. Fun to float and fish with the paddleboard. Allowed a lot of mobility.
