Green Below Fontenelle Sunday October 21, 2018

Date / Time: Sunday, October 21 2018 9-5 or so Location: Green Below Fontenelle. Morning at Ciner bridge. Afternoon floating from Seedskadee Islands to dodge in the pram. The Characters: KK Weather: Nice, mostly sunny highs in the mid 50s Water Temp: Guessing mid 40s, feet didn’t get cold. Water Level: Around 1000 cfs per gauge Water Clarity/Quality: Clear with moss on drift, greenish tint lower, reasonably clear higher Moon Phase: 2 days before full Hatches: Pseudo BWOs, midges Best Flies: Olive brown eyed UV bugger, Playboy Fishing: Day 1: Had been up week before with dad and not been able to fish down low because of off color water and moss. Weather had been clear and nice so wanted to see if it was possible to fish low around the kokes since that is prime this time of year. I stopped at Ciner bridge and looked arriving around 8:30 or so. Moss was thick on the drift still, but water was decent clarity and there were hundreds of Kokanee so I decided to give it a shot. I swung the pink and white hard for a while for virtually zero interest and piles of moss hooked on every cast. Stuck it out for a bit and eventually trailed an egg and immediately hooked several, landing only one with all the moss making it difficult to hold on to them. Eventually tired of the moss and went upriver. Decided to check out a road above dodge that I had always wondered about. It took me to the Seedskadee islands river right above the farthest channel which is a sweet spot to access. Found a spot to get the pram down and launched doing a bike shuttle to dodge over cross country along the fence. Not super easy but not too bad. Floated down and pounded the first drop hard bullshitting with a guy on the other side. After considerable work with the streamer, finally hooked a good one and lost it. Had another grab but that was it. Never threw the egg, wanted to just throw the streamer probably would have got them on the egg. Pounded spot after spot with various streamers and hardly hooked anything. Eventually did put the egg behind and still didn’t do well. Didn’t go through the sidechannel I had got them in previous week as I wanted a big pre spawn brown or rainbow that wasn’t around the redds. I hooked a few here and there and only landed one midsized brown. I feel like the fish just weren’t around and were where the kokes were since I floated over a lot of water barely seeing anything. Didn’t see any kokanee spawning anywhere in the area. Ultimately headed out having a very tough day other than the mossy water kokanee down low.
