Green Below Fontenelle February 8, 2015

Date / Time: Sunday, February 8, 2015 9:30am - 5pm Location: Green Below Fontenelle. Float from Slate to Dodge The Characters: BK & KK Weather: Sunny, mid 50s some breeziness but not bad. Unusually warm for February. Water Temp: Guessing high 30s. Water Level: 1100 cfs Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal Moon Phase: 1/2 way between full and last quarter Hatches: N/A Best Flies: Mixed bag Fishing: Brian and I drove up from Dutch John in the morning and floated from Slate Creek to Dodge. Ended up behind a couple boats that launched at head of refuge which was lame. We threw streamers a bunch since I was already in that mindset from the lower Green. It was pretty sporadic, nothing special but got a few here and there. Gold got my best fish in the rocks above the seedskadee islands. Brian got one or two on random stuff. Overall, a lot of work for little reward. We had planned on streamer fishing between nymph spots but spent a lot more time on the streamer than had planned. There were also a lot of people again especially wade fishermen in all the good spots which made it tougher. We stopped on river left in the middle of the islands and Brian nymphed and got a few, but nothing great. I pounded the streamer down through the rocks and the seam from both sides and didn’t get shit. Tried a few different patterns. Probably just not the right spot, should have focused more on the super slow lake stuff. Got out again and nymphed the river left channel drop on the next set of islands and hooked a couple, but not much. Streamer fished our way down and stopped on a slight structure point on river right and I got one good bow there on the worm. Fished the big drop below there hard from foot and from boat for nada. Eventually went down into the long small channel and got out above the pools. I hooked a pig in the top of one and lost it. Spooked some nice fish in the slow tailout of the pool and should have probably just site fished shallow nymphs since I had done that in there years previous and done well. Overall, tough day since we spent too much time on streamers and didn’t get the nymph dialed in considering the super cold water temps. Weather was pretty nice though, but pretty breezy.
