Green Below Fontenelle October 30, 2015
Date / Time: Friday, October 30 2015 Location: Green Below Fontenelle. OCI Bridge and river left road upstream of OCI The Characters: KK Weather: Partly Sunny, some clouds. Calm early, then windy. Fairly warm for time of year in the 50s Water Temp: Think I took a reading, but don’t remember in low 50s I think Water Level: Around 900 cfs Water Clarity/Quality: Clear some moss on drift still. Moon Phase: Few days after full moon Hatches: BWOs Best Flies: Tung Cone Playboy Bunny & Eggs Fishing: We planned to do halloween in Green River and I drove up earlier solo and Tammy came few hours later. Got to water around 12:30 and wanted to check out the lower river and road above OCI and see if I could find some aggressive Browns or remaining Kokanee. Drove over the bridge and looked down and immediately saw fish so decided to start there. Got out and looked and there were redds everywhere loaded with Kokanee and rainbows all over eating the eggs. Started off with a type III sink tip with a playboy trailed with an egg to see if i could skip the bobber. Immediately hooked fish so knew it would work. First were on egg and smaller then I hooked a pig right above one of the bridge pilings. That fish ate the playboy and ripped the hell out of me, landed it and taped it at 23 1/2 killer fish.
After that fish, took off the egg since I would much rather get em on the streamer. I wasn’t stripping just casting at an angle upstream to get the fly to get to the bottom and then letting it swing. I occasionally stripped but mostly just bouncing bottom and swinging. Worked my way up under the bridges and hammered fish consistently on the playboy. Got a lot of nice fish, mix of clean bright wild fish and some dark finless hatchery fish. Eventually decided to check out some other water after slaughtering them there for hours. Drove upriver and the wind had started kicking pretty good and light was getting low but I wanted to see if I could get to some of the water I had floated through that you couldn’t access from other side. Got in a few spots but never found more kokanee or browns and only hooked a few smaller fish. Eventually headed back and made a final pass through the bridge area again and stuck several more before heading back to meet up with Tammy. Killer day, good fun!
