Green Below Fontenelle Saturday July 12th, 2014

Date / Time: Saturday, July 12th 2014 Location: Green River Below Fontenelle. Dam to Dodge Bottoms Float The Characters: Kory, Brian K, Lee K Weather: Mostly Sunny Water Temp: Mid 50s guess Water Level: Slightly high around 2,000 cfs Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal clear Moon Phase: Full Moon Best Flies: PMD Cripple, Rusty Spinner, KK Caddis, PMX Hatches: Caddis, PMDs, Sallies Fishing: Came up for weekend with Tammy and Anna and stayed at Best Western. They stayed back and dad picked me up on way in around 8 or so. We met Brian at the takeout around 9am and got on the water 9:30ish or so. Found a few fish up in first flat on left above weeping rock cable along grassy bank, but didn’t stick around. Several people and boats around. Had dry dropper going, and dad stuck a nice bow on the peacock stone but kept seeing risers here and there so switched to the small dry rod. BK was rowing and we kept passing and putting the first few down. Then found a sipper along the cliffs. I put the rusty over him several times and got him to eat, ripped out and into my backing way down river, killer battle eventually landed low 20s or so fat rainbow. Worked down and saw risers on opposite bank but skiff fishing down that side so we left it. Found a few in big flat by Jerome’s rock and BK and dad missed them so we headed down and parked at car body channel. Spooked some cows off the island and they charged through the channel to land, so walked down a bit BK went down to point and I looked around in the channel but didn’t see much so walked back to boat and as I was getting in saw a couple come up right where cows had crossed. Decided to stay and stuck several in there on the pmd cripple. Saw one way up in the flat above the channel and worked up to that one, it wouldn’t eat the pmd and I saw it chow a caddis. Switched over and hooked it right away, it ripped me up and got off. Dad got one decent one in there on the PA too and missed some others. Saw some more on edge as we were heading out and stuck and lost one. Picked up BK down below and he had got one good fish, but didn’t get much else and was frustrated he walked all over but saw some pigs in the side channel but couldn’t reach them. Worked down to next sidechannel opposite of private land with campers parked. Subtle risers were along edge and I stuck a cutty that ripped the hell out of me and lost another rainbow. Dad got a nice rainbow, his biggest that kicked his ass. I stuck another giant cutty and lost that one. Then an idiot came down through that couldn’t row and put all of our fish down. Found a few more on the long slow bank, but BK missed them and dad didn’t get any. Floated through the channel on left and found a pod and BK stuck a couple cutties. I fished the streamer here and there since week previous was so good, but nothing. Then hooked a cutty on one of the drops. Fished down and eventually threw dry dropper for a while since didn’t see any other pods for minimal action. I went back to streamer and pounded it for nothing. Eventually were way down above sidechannel above skunk camp and BK stuck a pig brown on the micro cicada and lost it by the boat, big fish. He stuck another one or two on that as I kept throwing streamer for nothing. Eventually I switched back to dry and we got to the long sidechannel below the islands. Saw some sporadic risers and there were caddis around, so I put on the royal stimulator. BK spotted one and I cast into one of the drops and stuck that fish on the stimi, ripper 18” bow. At bend in channel, noticed several more risers sporadic but up nonetheless. BK had the PMX and stuck one good one and we ended up putting the others down. I switched to the wullf. Found more super subtle risers at bottom right where it dumps back into main river. Stuck one of those cutties on the wullf and put the others down. Caddis were starting to get thick and we spotted a few more here and there and eventually found some good pods at next big drop. Dad got a pig that ripped him up and I stuck and lost a pig on the PMX. Another pig was on the other side and I stuck and lost that one too. Both of those were on the PMX that had the weird hook I was worried about. Took that off and as we worked down found a few more, but it wasn’t on fire like it should have been with all the caddis. Pulled the boat and decided to look at dam at last light. Got up there and wind was whipping after being calm below. Stopped at slate to dump trash and take one last look and wind down there, but I glanced over edge and sure enough several up in the calm edge next to bank. I grabbed my rod and put caddis over them for no results, tried a few diff ones. Then switched to the spinner and first cast 17” bow. I had lost my clear glasses so was losing light. BK kept fishing and stuck one. Looked at the point below bridge and there were some more pigs, but I was done and in non fishing clothes and mosquitos were out so sat in car. BK gave it a shot and ran away swatting. Killer day overall.
