Green Below Fontenelle Sunday July 13th, 2014

Sidechannel-Bow-1

Date / Time: Sunday, July 13th 2014 Location: Green River Below Fontenelle. Weeping Rock Area The Characters: Kory, Brian K Weather: Mostly Sunny Water Temp: Mid 50s guess Water Level: Slightly high around 2,000 cfs Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal clear Moon Phase: Day after Full Moon Best Flies: PMD Cripple, Rusty Spinner, PMD Spinner Hatches: Tricos, Caddis, PMDs, Sallies Fishing: Sidechannel-Bow-1 Got up early and headed up since Brian was heading on to North Dakota and Tammy and Anna were back at hotel in Kemmerer and she wanted to leave early by 1. Got on the water around 8 and headed to flats below weeping rock CG since day previous there were risers there but a boat had them occupied so we wanted a crack at them. They were up as we walked up the bank but we saw a few up higher and figured the approach from above was best anyway, so went up to those. I got a 15 inch brown on the rusty and put my other one down. BK put another one down off of the fence. Then we worked down and I gave him the fish at the head of the pool, there were a couple of pigs up and he stuck and lost the big one and missed the others. As I worked down while he was doing that, there were more up at the bottom of the shoal inside and I got a 16” bow there on the rusty. Worked down and crossed looking for others and didn’t find any until walking up the opposite bank under the cliffs where I got a good 18” cutty on the spinner. Worked down through and there were fish up in the flats, but they were sporadic and it was a super deep wade so bailed. BK spotted a huge pod on river right at the top of the sidechannel that is normally unfishable under normal water levels. I left him to those and went into the lower end of the sidechannel as I had remembered a few years previous during higher flows when there were a bunch of risers in there. Sure enough big pod in the deep pool, so worked on them and put a couple down at top but biggest fish was in the back and worked him eventually getting him on the yellow bodied spinner, ripping battle with a jump or two and eventually landed him killer, super fat, bright rainbow around 20 inches. Sidechannel-Bow-2 it on that fish at a little before 11am as I had to get Tammy and Anna and head home. BK got a few in the pool above and I took off. He said he got a few more after I left. Pretty good morning, definitely not as good as lower water but still got some good fish on dries.
