Drove up in the am after staying night at Hams Fork. Got on water around 9am and there were thick Mosquitos since water had been super high for weeks and just came down over previous few weeks. Tricos were out, but not super thick. Fished a few fish below launch while doing shuttle but put them down. Walked all the way up to edge in campground and found one other good fish, but put that one down too. On float, fished dry dropper but it was slow. Finally got a pig rainbow on the flatwater edge above the island above skunk camp. It was rising and chomped the cicada, killer battle good 18-19” fish. There was a good pod below that rising, but I jumped out of the boat to land my fish and sent mud and waves and they went down. Worked down and Dave got one eat on the stone an lost it I think, but it was slow. Jason found some risers in the backeddies on river left above skunk camp and stuck a few. We pounded the riffle and drop in front of skunk camp, me with dry dropper and dave with streamer for nada. I couldn’t get the dropper dialed in for some reason, fishing the peacock stone and pmd nymph split case I had tied but must not have been right color, size or something. Jason was getting them on stone dropper and pmd nymph he said, but I couldn’t. After that worked down and Dave threw streamer to my chagrin and we got into a little tiff over my constant badgering. Stopped at the Seedskadee islands middle channel where right channel dumps back in to look for risers. I got out and hoofed it down to the bluffs above the long channel and got hammered by mosquitos. I never found any risers that were consistent, but spotted a big pod of a ton of fish at the top of the channel chowing nymphs. Walked back up having not made a cast. Dave had talked to some guy who was throwing black streamers on the spey and said it was on fire, so reluctantly because I wanted risers, I said what the fuck lets do it since dave was dying to throw streamers anyway. I was up and threw on the black woolhead and within 10 minutes hooked a fat 18” brown, so was pretty convinced. Dave got up and got a small one and I got back up and got a giant brown near the slot where I had seen the pod from the bluff, probably 22” or so. Picture of it sucks unfortunately.
After that, we alternated and pounded quite a few, they were on the black good. We would go a stretch with nothing for a bit and then bang a few when we got near structure or good spots. Got several nice rainbows mostly including a killer leopard spotted beauty that dave caught. Jason eventually deep nymphed since he had uncle dan and they got into them pretty good on the stone nymph and pmd trailer. Good day, unexpectedly on the streamer in July in bright sun.
