Green River Below Flaming Gorge 2-27-2015

Date / Time: Friday February 27, 2015 got on water around 10 and off at 5:30 Location: Green River Utah Section B Float The Characters: KK, Matt Olson, Chad Jaques Weather: Mostly sunny, windy and cold mid 20s in morning, calming and warmer in afternoon Water Temp: Just under 40 degrees at dam according to USGS Water Level: Dual peak releases 3,000 until 11:00 a.m. then dropping to 1200 cfs around 2:00 p.m. Coming back up around 4:00 p.m. which we would have not seen. Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal Moon Phase: 2 days after first quarter Hatches: Thick midges, decent BWOs Best Flies: Fished streamers mostly with a few stops at dries. Yellow sex dungeon was on the best for a while. Also got them on white, goldilox, black. Black was prob second best. Fishing: Good streamer fishing, but not as good as few weeks previous. Tammy, Anna and I had driven to LC the day before since Tammy had a presentation at Altamont high school. Matt picked me up and we met Chad in DJ. This was going to be first of 3 days while Tammy stayed in Altamont with Anna. Anna got sick on day 2 so we bailed on day 3. Got on the water around 10 and it had gotten very cold. Wind was also kicking, and we had heavy ice guides. Fishing started off sporadic on streamers, but when switched to yellow it was pretty good for a while. Switched around and Chad actually stayed on the oars for a long time. Fished a few diff flies and prob second best was goldilox above Red Creek. As we got below Red Creek, it slowed but we still got fish here and there. There were billions of midges coming off and sporadic BWOs so we switched for a bit, but Chad wasn’t slowing too much so that didn’t happen that good. Below Red Creek, black seemed to be better and we got a couple good fish on that. In the later afternoon it actually calmed and warmed up quite a bit after a miserable morning of icy cold. There was actually another boat on which was surprising. Good day, but not as good as few weeks previous. In retrospect, water temp drop by a degree may have contributed.
