Green River Below Flaming Gorge A Section 4-4-2015

Date / Time: Friday, April 4, 2015 10-4 Location: Green River Utah A Section Float The Characters: KK & Matt Olson Weather: Nice weather but breezy and ultimately quite windy in afternoon high mid to high 50s. Water Temp: 41 degrees at dam according to USGS Water Level: 1660 until 4:15pm going to 2100 Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal Moon Phase: Full moon Hatches: Midges & BWOs Best Flies: Blue wing KK cripple, z lon sparkle dun, matt’s klinkhamer emerger Fishing: Day 2 after wading below little hole day before Got on the water later than I had hoped since Matt made a big breakfast with sweet potatoes that took a long time to cook. It was Saturday in April on A section so plenty of people around. We pushed down and threw streamers on the push but nothing was happening with that. Eventually got into the lower river and threw dry dropper a bit as hatch was just starting, Matt stuck the first one and broke it off and we didn’t fish it long enough to really dial it in. We did get a few good drifts that should have gotten eaten, but just had on generic zebras. Pulled over in a few spots in the fast water but it wasn’t really going. Eventually got to dripping springs and the bugs started to kick in good. Wind was picking up though and it was erratic in it’s direction. Fish were up good on the right edge but when the gust would come bugs would blow one way then another. We had lunch in the bottom right corner and stuck a couple there before moving down. Eventually had our best fishing in the pockets and small eddies on the right side but the erratic gusts made it tough and boats started to catch up too. Stuck a good number of fish, but it wasn’t the day I had hoped for. We were driving back to Altamont and then Matt on home so we wanted to get off and couldn’t stay so off the water around 5 or so which was later than we planned. Day before was much better and it would have been a better call to wade fish again, but I wanted to float and was beat from all the walking the day before.
