Green River Below Flaming Gorge B Section 2-28-2015
Date / Time: Saturday February 28, 2015 got on water around 11:30 and off at 5:30 Location: Green River Utah Section B Float The Characters: KK, BK, Matt Olson Weather: Overcast, breezy in morning, warmer than previous day and not as windy. Probably low 30s in am and low 40s pm. Water Temp: Just under 40 degrees at dam according to USGS Water Level: Dual peak releases 3,000 until 11:00 a.m. then dropping to 1200 cfs around 2:00 p.m. Coming back up around 4:00 p.m. which we would have not seen. Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal Moon Phase: 3 days after first quarter Hatches: Thick midges, good BWOs Best Flies: Fished streamers mostly, but dries were quite good with BWOs coming off pretty heavy for a bit so switched for an hour or so. For streamers, overall black sex dungeon and black woolhead best. Yellow on fire day previous but not on this day, maybe overcast? For BWOs didn’t matter much, BK’s little BWO slayed for him. Fishing: Good streamer fishing, but not as good as few weeks previous. Tammy, Anna and I had driven to LC to days previous since Tammy had a presentation at Altamont high school. This was day 2 of a 3 day trip that got cut short because Anna got sick and we cancelled day 3. Chad fished with us day previous but headed home. Brian was on graveyards and got off last minute so had the day off. He had just gotten home though so we let him sleep for a couple hours and then floated a bit later. Windy initially again, but not as cold also a little later start which helped. Writing this 3 weeks later so trying to remember details, but it was good streamers but they weren’t on yellow as good so switched it up and seemed to be on black best. Got them on a few diff things but black kept being best producer. Tons of BWOs as we got to Jackson area and fish up pretty good so we switched for a bit. It was already late though and we were taking out at cowboy at 6 so we fished dries for a bit but had to go back to streamers because of time. BK stuck several fish on the right below Cicada camp I believe it is called across from Trail’s end. Good fish up there, could have stayed for a while and bank fished and worked down the edge. Below Red Creek we were cruising through fairly quick and I was throwing the black from the back and getting a lot of action. As we slowed, we were banging them good on the black. It was totally overcast and perfect conditions, calmed down and was nice. By far the best fishing below Red Creek I had out of the 3 trips so far in 2015. Brian got a pig hybrid in one of the rock piles a little ways above long lake, Matt was even doubled up. We landed it and taped it just under 24” one of the bigger fish I have seen in the Green in a while. Most of the fish other than this one were under 20 with an occasional bigger one. Eventually switched to straight woolhead black with lead eyes instead of sex dungeon and they ate that killer too. Fished it out with that and it was a solid day especially afternoon below Red Creek. Risers were all the way down and could have done that if we had the time.
