It dumped snow the day before almost 2 feet at the lodge, but weather cleared and warmed fast. We actually took Anna sledding in the morning and I headed to river around 11, fishing by noon. Parked at 3rd ramp and walked across and fish were up all over. Stuck a few good rainbows right away on the cripple emerger that I had tied, but then fish started to get picky. I waded to bank to see better but still they were super selective, but I got a few to eat. They didn’t seem to even really look at my bugs much and weren’t eating duns that I saw too much at this point. Later in the day I noticed spinners on the water and I think that the day before’s epic hatch in sleeting rain had created a big spinner fall and that was what the fish were on. I worked my way down the right bank and got fish here and there, but it wasn’t on fire, bright sun and warm so bugs were flying away instantly. Fish were eating them, but they weren’t on the water long so it wasn’t as obvious. As I got down into Mann’s Chute and the big flat below, I noticed that a lot of fish were rising but sporadically so I started to spend more time watching and spotting and once I would find the fish and get the drift over them they ate good. Got several down that flat. I was hopscotching with a drift boat on river right too, so that was messing some of my fish up. I eventually got ahead of them and ended up on the shelf above the eddy above grasshopper camp. There were several killer fish up all through there, but somewhat sporadic. I picked most of them off and missed a few and got some good fish including one that battled like crazy as Doug Roberts was floating by. Eventually I worked my way back up and picked fish off here and there. The hatch never was super dense with the warm sunny weather but the fish were looking for the bugs. Got a killer rainbow after I crossed at the top of Minnesota against the upper cliffs and called it a day on that fish and walked back. Fish were up like crazy all the way back so could have stayed until dark slaying, but wanted to head back and see Anna and Tammy. Good day, despite the bugs flying away quick.
