Green River Below Flaming Gorge 1-11-2015
Date / Time: Saturday January 11, 2015 got on water around 9 and off at 5 Location: Green River Utah Section B Float The Characters: KK & Dave Malone Weather: Sunny, occasional breezy but not bad low to mid 40 Water Temp: 41 degrees according to USGS Water Level: Dual peak releases 3,000 until 11:00 a.m. then dropping to 1200 cfs around 2:00 p.m. Coming back up around 4:00 p.m. which we would have not seen. Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal Moon Phase: 2 days before last quarter Hatches: Some midges, occasional BWO Best Flies: Fished streamers all day. Had a bunch of new patterns. Best for me seemed to be playboy bunny despite all the articulated stuff we threw. They did love the olive articulated especially a big one I tied, but the hook was small and couldn’t really stick them. Dave also got them good on a smaller articulated he threw. Fishing: Tammy, Anna and I had driven to LC the night before. I got up early and drove up and met Dave who was staying at the lodge with his family. Becky dropped us off at Little Hole around 9 on the water in BK’s boat. It was quite warm at the start, but then a breeze kicked in although sporadic and it was cooler until we got down to grasshopper. Dave started out with some sparser stuff Matt from Western gave him and got the first fish in Terrace on that. Water was higher, so had to fish different spots. All of Minnesota was good and the eddy above it. I threw one of my smaller articulated sculpins and fish were on it hard and I broke it off immediately somehow. Throughout the day we switched off and fished a bunch of different stuff and it was very good in the slower spots. Fish were quite concentrated with the flows. Never did get any really big fish, lots of 17-18. Fish were in good shape though and fighting good. Threw a giant olive sculpin articulated that didn’t sink much that they loved but couldn’t hook them good. Cycled through a lot of different stuff and they seemed on the playboy the best, olive second. Dave did throw a reddish body thing at the very end that seemed to be good. Fun day, good fishing but not as good as when the water is lower in winter.
