Green River Below Flaming Gorge 2-7-2015
Date / Time: Saturday February 7, 2015 got on water around 9 and off at 5:30 Location: Green River Utah Section B Float The Characters: KK & Brett Johnston Weather: Sunny, unseasonably warm 50s breezy in afternoon but not bad Water Temp: 41 degrees at dam according to USGS Water Level: Dual peak releases 3,000 until 11:00 a.m. then dropping to 1200 cfs around 2:00 p.m. Coming back up around 4:00 p.m. which we would have not seen. Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal Moon Phase: 4 days after full 4 days before last quarter Hatches: Some midges, occasional BWO Best Flies: Fished streamers all day. Had more new patterns to try out. Fished olive ep fiber head articulated olive sculpin which fished killer. Got them on everything and overall smaller dubbing head articulated olive sculpin seemed best, but hard to say. They ate black, white and olive didn’t try a lot of other colors just pattern variations on those colors primarily. Fishing: Excellent streamer fishing. Tammy, Anna and I had driven to LC the day before after staying in Midway at a timeshare her parents had for a couple of nights. I headed to the Green early morning and met up with Brett. Becky dropped us in and picked us up. Brett had fished A section a few days previous and did horrible so was skeptical but I was confident it would be good and it was. We pretty much got into fish right away and continued to get them good all through B section. The olive sculpin variations seemed best, but they ate all we threw at them. Were fishing a type 3 sink tip, so not too deep and not too shallow. They definitely wanted a pause, but strip speed not sure mattered. I was fishing erratic with pause and they ate that good. Fishing was best in slower areas with the higher water, but oddly enough we got several in fast water including washboard and even one in the lower right of red creek. Wind picked up below red creek and it was a lot slower, but I think the water dropping contributed to that. We did stick fish here and there, but not as many as I expected especially compared to previous years during this time when water flows were low and consistent. Eventually as we got lower and water was somewhat stable did stick a few more and I ended up getting two big fish on the very last stretch top right above cowboy bar where we took out. Good day.
