Water Temp: 41 degrees at dam according to USGS Water Level: 1660 until 4:15pm going to 2100, didn’t notice the rise even though we were on late Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal Moon Phase: Day before full moon Hatches: Midges & BWOs Best Flies: Blue wing KK cripple, z lon sparkle dun, matt’s klinkhamer emerger Fishing: Drove to LC in the morning with Matt and Anna in tow and dropped her off with grandma, Tammy was coming out later that evening for Easter weekend and I was meeting her the following eve. Matt and I got on the water at Little Hole around noon. Weather was super nice, almost too nice but cool. Fish were rising immediately as we crossed at the 3rd ramp and I banged several as we crossed. We got stuck there for a bit since the fish were rising so good and eventually made our way down. Water was a bit higher than I expected so the cross was slightly deep and I was trying to strategize where to get back. We worked down through all the spots, fish were rising in all the slow edges and backeddies. Had some good fish in the cliffs below Terrace pool, fish were going off in Terrace, but I left that to Matt. We ended up in T2 for hours and I fished the big slow slick below the eddy break and hammered a bunch of fish. Super cool, fun visual fishing. Since it was so calm, the fish were up good in there and would go out of their way to take a BWO.
Matt’ Nice Brown
Part of the Rainbow GatheringMatt stayed in the eddy and slayed too. Fish weren’t super picky since the bugs weren’t on the water too thick. We crossed back over in the tailout below T2 and it was pretty mellow. Slightly deep, but not too bad. On that side we worked our way down the edge of Minnesota and found several pods. Got into a ton of rainbows and was calling it a “rainbow gathering” pretty entertaining. Super fat fish, good battles. Had some incredibly visual takes at one point boat drifting behind and super high viz poly wing floating down and the pig bow I was fishing casually moved out and inhaled the fly, I actually waited and stuck the fish and the guide cheered as the whole thing went down. Don’t know who it was, but it was perfect audience scenario..fun fish. Worked down to bottom and then started to work up and found a bunch of fish stacked in the pockets in the cliffs at the top of Minnesota. I stuck a bunch there with dark wing patterns, Matt was having trouble seeing. We eventually headed up over cliff at the last point and had a steep climb with a rope stuck in the cliff, pretty crazy. Back down above the cliffs, fish were chowing midges so stuck some of those and worked back up to the car and stuck several more as the sun was getting low. Billions of midges and fish up all the way back. Killer day, headed back to BK’s and Matt made a killer dinner.
