Green River Utah B Section 1-25-2014

Date / Time: 1-26-2014 Launched at Little Hole around 10:00 a.m. Location: B Section Green River The Characters: KK & BK Weather: Sunny, calm. Started in mid 30s, close to 50 degrees when we got off the river around 4:30 p.m. Water Temp: Guessing high 30s Water Level: Around 800 cfs Water Clarity /Quality: Crystal clear Moon Phase: A few days after last quarter Best Techniques: Streamers Best Flies: Olive red eye sculpin #2. Got a few on other patterns, didn’t fish light colors very long, so hard to say if they would have been better. Fishing: Started off cold, especially in the shade but we got our first fish by Minnesota and were moving fast. We decided to float long and get off at Cowboy Bar to fish some of the upper C section so were moving fast initially. Fishing was quite good in all the typical spots for winter, slower tailouts, deep holes, seams. I was fishing the full sink intermediate which was good for presentation, but tough to see the subtle eats thus many fish grabbed and gone. When we could see the fly, it was more productive as you could set when you saw the eat. Got several typical good fish above Red Creek. Below Red Creek we hit about noon with full, bright sun. Initially it was quite good, but then the slower water the fish seemed very spooky. Brian was fishing a super bright floating line and it seemed mostly spooking fish. When I got up, I went back to the intermediate despite the difficulty of seeing it and seeing takes and immediately hooked fish. We got some real nice fish below red creek and missed a lot more. We spotted several large Rainbows near redds in long lake and other typical spawning areas. Made one lap through long lake with the bead rig but already had spooked them with streamers so got nada. I spotted a big bow on one redd above Indian on the right and Brian threw up and across above him and the second the fish saw the fly it raced over and hammered it, super cool scenario. Brian also missed a giant brown right below that in the right channel above IC. Last fish was a pig Brown for Brian right above Cowboy on the left, good ending to a good day.
