Green River, Utah: March 27th, 2011

Date / Time: 3/27/2011 Location: Walked down to Grasshopper Island from little hole The Characters: Kory Kapaloski, Tammy Stevenson Weather: Mostly cloudy and calm, 40s-50s Water Temp: 38-39 (guess) Water Level / Tide: Low 900 cfs or so and stable Water Clarity/Quality: Clear Moon Phase: Just before last quarter Fishing: Tam and I drove up from Altamont day before stayed at RCL and had dinner with BK and Becky. Headed down mid day arriving at little hole around noon with Tammy. Walked down to Stonefly camp and found a few fish up on midges even in mid river. They were pretty eager to eat a trailing shuck midge in #20 or so. Made our way down to grasshopper hitting spots here and there and got a few more decent fish. As it got to about 2:30 or so with no BWOs I thought it wasn’t going to happen. Tammy headed back to the car and RCL and I stayed for her to pick me up at 6pm. After she left, the BWOs exploded and fish went ballistic. It ended up staying dead calm and the hatch was awesome. Fish were up all over the place and never saw another angler. Fish were fat and in very good shape. Many good sized fish 18 inch plus and they fought super hard which is awesome since that hasn’t been the case here for many years. Fished the main hatch above Grasshopper and worked my way up and crossed. Fished my way back to little hole and fish were looking for the bugs since they continued to rise even after no bugs were around. I fished a new cripple pattern that I came up with and they were all over it. #20 with parachute pulled over, rear thread body with dubbing front and trailing shuck. Phenomenal day, even after the hatch was completely over most every fish would eat if you put the fly on them.
