Green River WY Below Fontenelle 3-8-2014
Date / Time: 3-8-2014 9-5 Location: Green below Fontenelle. Floated 6 mile to OCI, then wade fished Gold’s Bar The Characters: Kory and BK Weather: Sunny, mostly calm. High 40s low 50s Water Temp: Low 40s guess Water Level: 1000 cfs or just under Water Clarity/Quality: Lower river was off color, gold’s bar area mostly clear with touch of color Moon Phase: Just after first quarter Best Techniques: Nymphing with bead egg and leech Best Flies: Bead egg, few on leech, worm sucked Fishing: Drove up early morning and met BK at takeout OCI, he had already launched at 6 mile hill. Water was off color, but decent looking and we debated but decided to go for it. We fished spots we knew held fish and after a lot of work hooked a few, but it was tough going. Ultimately ended up hooking 6-8 between us actually more silvery browns than anything else. Couple of pretty decent fish in the upper teens close to 20 but it was more work than it should have been. Decided to push through and head up to Gold’s bar although we still hit a few spots pretty good but fishing was tough so we bypassed a lot of water. Ultimately ended up at Gold’s Bar around 3pm and water was in great shape. Ended up crushing them almost immediately mostly on the egg with some on the olive leech leading. Had the worm between the two and got zero fish on it. Deeper pockets at lower end were really good and then we got dirty and fished spawners that were all over the shallows at the top. Slaughtered them. Actually got one pig brown too in the lower deep stuff, killer fish. Good close to a tough start. Should have just fished up higher the whole time.
