Green River, Wyoming Fontenelle: September 17-18, 2011

Date / Time: 9/17-18/2011 Location: September 17: Fontenelle evening after hams fork for last 30  minutes at dam caddis spot. September 18: Pontoon float from Dam to Slate. The Characters: Kory Kapaloski, Dave Malone Weather: Partly sunny and windy. Second day was a lot less windy, but still blowing. Water Temp: 60-65 (guess) Water Level / Tide: Moderate 1,200 cfs or so Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal Moon Phase: 5 days after full moon. Fishing: Day 1: Bunch of fish up at last light. Got a few nice ones on Caddis, but they were a little picky. Wind made seeing them tough and the fish didn’t get up until the very last bit of light, but there were shitloads of caddis hatching as it got dark and the fish were on them hard. Got some good fish that ripped and lost several others. Dave also got some good fish. Day 2: Tried to decide between chasing migrators from above reservoir or staying below after camping in Dave’s camper. Decided on below reservoir since I knew the water and Dave was dying to fish it again. Tons of Kokanee. Threw white bugger at first and hooked and lost one fish but they weren’t really in it. I stopped an fished some trout hanging around them in first sidechannel on dropper but they were picky, ultimately hooked and broke off one and then got a smaller one. Switched to dry dropper and got a sweet brown on the dropper on the drift, but they weren’t really on it. Went back and forth between that and streamer and wasn’t dialed in. Found a riser in front of one of the rocks at bottom of big flat above car body and put a stimmy over it and it it inhaled it. Killer battle nice 17-18” bow sweet fish. Saw another above the rock above it but it stopped rising. Ultimately stayed with the big dry and dropper and caught some fish on it, but it was pretty slow. Threw streamers hard on some drops for nothing. Couldn’t dial in dropper either. All in all fairly slow day but figure the fish were probably chowing the Kokanee eggs and shit they were kicking up. Should have deep nymphed but didn’t feel like it. Were going to fish late or hit ham’s and stay another night but Dave was spent and wanted to head out. I threw a little fit, but relented and we headed out.
