Green River, Wyoming Fontenelle: September 3, 2011

Date / Time: 9/3/2011 Location: Fontenelle wade fished upper end mostly a little around Dodge Bottoms. The Characters: Kory Kapaloski, Tammy, Dave Malone & Jade Weather: Mostly sunny and occasional breeze Water Temp: 60-65 (guess) Water Level / Tide: Moderate 1,200 cfs or so Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal Moon Phase: A few days before first quarter Fishing: Tammy and I drove up Friday night and camped at Slate Creek with Dave and Jade. Cold front had come in and it was a lot colder. I got up and cruised upriver with Dave and Jade while Tammy went to Green River to see her sister and babies. Saw a couple of fish on the high bank up by where the private property below weeping rock is. Fished to them, but Dave put his down and mine wouldn’t come back. We went upriver and covered a bunch of water. I ended up throwing hopper and got a pig cutty in the riffle above the channels by the car body. Other than that, minimal action on the hopper. Messed around with dropper for naught. Fished the big slow rocky pool and found one good riser and put Dave on it. He ultimately got it on a PMD or caddis of some sort. It was a decent brown around 18. I worked upriver and found some risers along the edge eating PMDs and/or caddis but very selective. Got one decent brown and couldn’t get the others to eat so moved above the drop. Found a pod of killer fish and ended up getting a sweet brown that ripped me up on an E/C caddis, that fish put the others down. Kept walking up, but didn’t find much. Eventually clambored down the cliff and almost got injured and walked up under the seeps. Still didn’t see much except pods of sporadic kokanee and fish hanging. Then put on a hopper, but left the 5x. Spotted a huge cutty after almost stepping on it. He inhaled the hopper and I had him on and easily broke him off. Took a break and checked out Dodge from river left but it was super warm water and not much going on. One fish chased down the hopper, but I missed it. Nothing else so I bailed. Went back up and ultimately headed to area below the dam for evening caddis. Slayed a bunch of fish, but mostly rainbows. Medium sized cutties and browns first then all rainbows at the end from 16-19 all on the bigger stimmy. Earlier, the fish were more picky at the end the big stimmy worked well.
