Hams Fork 6-16 Through 6-17-2012
Date / Time: 6-16-2012 6-17-2012 Location: Hams Fork Buck Ranch The Characters: Kory and Tammy. Weather: Mostly sunny, cold night. Mid to high 70s daytime. First day calm, second day super windy. Water Temp: low to mid 50s guess Water Level: Release listed at 167 or so. All spillway release. Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal clear. Moon Phase: Between last quarter and new. Fishing: Drove up Friday evening and got there late. Very cold at night, freezing temps. Camped through Sunday. First day started fishing around 9:30 am. Fish were up sporadically it looked like but then noticed in riffles fish were up good. Fish were heavily stacked in riffles, not as many in pools. Tons of PMD nymphs on drift sporadic hatching. Caddis coming off and quite a few explosive rises. Ended up switching through a few flies until 16 caddis that I tied with partridge and trailing shuck and they were all over it. Also got em good on 16 EZ caddis. Couldn’t get them to eat elk hair. Got one on stimmy. Many huge fish, ripping hot perfect water temp. Hard to land and ballistic battles. Took break mid day and went back out and fish weren’t up as good, tried streamers to no avail. Fished the evening with Tam, but it never got going might have been too cold. Tried streamers a bit again for naught. Next day got on around 9 and they were going good again. Wind was kicking up and by mid day was howling, but didn’t matter much. Hammered them again on the same caddis pattern in 16 and 18. Tammy came out with me after a few hours and ended up getting a huge fish right off the bat and a few others. She did well and was casting good. Packed up camp and fished another hour and ended on a giant 24 incher that ripped the shit out of me. Great two days.
