Henry's Fork July 2-5, 2015
Date / Time: 7/2/2015 Through 7/5/2015. Sporadic fishing each day Location: Henry’s Fork Idaho The Characters: Kory Kapaloski, Tammy, Anna, Brian Kapaloski, Brett Johnston, Langfords, Olsons Weather: Mostly sunny first three days, cloudy last day Water Temp: Likely low 60s, felt warm Water Level / Tide: High water around 1700 cfs, jumped few days before arrival Water Clarity/Quality: Slight green tint Moon Phase: Few days after full moon Best Flies: Rusty Spinner quill body size 16 Fishing: 4th of July trip with family camping at Riverside Campground so only fishing here and there. Overall fishing was tough with high water and minimal bugs. Fished first evening from 9-10 pm above logjam across from small dirt parking lot. Brett and I headed up and I spotted one in front of rock right off on far bank. Waded out and missed it twice on the rusty spinner. Good fish. Another one was rising above where that one was and ate on first drift and I hooked it. Battled it all over around rocks and chased it around but eventually lost it. Looked like a 16” or so. Saw a couple other one and done sporadics but never found another consistent fish. Second day went to Millionaire’s with Tammy and Anna in the morning around 10 am and wanted T to cast to one. Not much happening with high water, minimal bugs. Did find one pig rising in bottom of flat and waded out, but Anna was getting tired ready for nap so Tammy made 3 or 4 half hearted casts and we left it rising. Saw one or two others on way out but largely dead. Checked it out later in the day and zero was happening, Mike texted that fish were on streamers up by Angler’s Lodge so we headed there. Watched junior getting guided by Mike make same cast several times and stuck one so I rigged a streamer. Walked up to lawn below Anglers and worked out to a log and banged a good fish in the slack behind it on the goldilox, good battle 18-19” fatty. May have had another eat or two, but that was it. Fished the evening again down below logjam and found a few up in the boulders, hooked one right away on rusty that battled good and lost it. Missed 2 or 3 other good fish. BK was above me and missed one or two on the rusty. It was sporadic action with some fish up good here and there. 3rd day floated in the morning from Osborne to Riverside with Tammy, Anna, BK and Brett. Tammy and Anna got out at Wood Road. We threw streamers hard until they got out for nada. Good number of fish up in Wood Road area springs on PMDs, but lots of dudes so we didn’t even fish. Worked down looking for fish and threw streamer and eventually found a good fish up in midriver pine haven area. It ate rusty on first drift and I stuck it and battled it and landed a good 18 incher or so. We were trading off in the front with guy in back under umbrella Tammy and Anna had left. BK was up and we found another riser that we put down and then one more he stuck that ripped out and came unbuttoned. Brett was up and we didn’t see any other risers so went back to the streamer to fish out but didn’t hit shit. Last day was super overcast and looking prime but we were heading out and feeling a little off from 4th of July festivities night before. Had breakfast at Angler’s Lodge and saw swallows working but didn’t spot any fish. Went to Logjam and there were a few above the log so wadered up for a quick last session. Got a 15 incher right away on rusty, then a 16 incher both fairly instant eats. BK worked a pig above the logs that went down eventually. I worked up but only saw sporadics, worked back down and saw a pig above BK, it rose I put one drift with rusty and instant eat. It was a 19 inch at least fish but barely fought though and had its mouth ripped up and was snaky, cool eat though. BK found one more in front of a rock above log and got it to eat my rusty and missed it then it wouldn’t eat again so we bailed. Matt who had been fishing hard with Pam every day but having a rough go caught up with us and we sent him over, but he said he threw everything at it and didn’t get it. Fun trip for all.
