LC Ranch Wednesday May 4th - Friday May 6th, 2016
Date / Time: May 4th afternoon-evening. May 5th morning and evening. May 6th morning. Location: LC Ranch The Characters: Kory K. Steve Frank and Matt Olson joined on Friday May 6th Weather: Mostly calm, sunny high clouds. T storms rolled in especially big time on Friday. Water Temp: mid 50s guess Water Level: Ponds were all full for the most part Water Clarity/Quality: Mostly clear Moon Phase: Few days before New Moon on May 6. Best Flies: CDC ant, MFC cricket, wine zebra. Fishing: Tammy worked long days all week so decided to go out for a few days and get assistance, fish and let her get work done. First afternoon drove by road pond and fish were up despite thinking nothing was in there. Some pigs around cruising shoreline and sporadically rising. Dropped off Anna and launched my pram which was a mistake as it spooked them largely. Noticed flying ants on water immediately and figured that was the game. Tried to wait it out a bit and found one sipping in the back and stuck it but broke it off. Moved on to Dog and there were sporadic fish up pretty good on chironomids but they were small. I got fish to eat the ant initially but they became very selective. Never got the dry dialed in and didn’t want to go super small midge so instead put on the dry drop. They ate the size 16 zebra pretty good and as it got darker a few started eating the purple chubby lead fly. Took off the dropper and stuck several on the chubby including a pig bow and some other quite good fish. Day 2: Got on water mid morning on dog and ants were already on the water. Ended up being a massive ant fall with high clouds and warm conditions. Fish were all over them gunning several feet to crush them with some leviathans eating. It was tough to pin them with the distance they were moving, but I managed a few. The smaller cricket was a good pattern as well as CDC ant. There were bigger females sporadically and mostly smaller males. The fall lasted a couple of hours and then tapered off. Fishing was better after the majority of bugs dissipated when the fish were actively looking for them. Fun super good fishing. Think I went back out in the evening and it was similar to first eve. Day 3: Fished with Matt and Steve and hopped around mainly fishing dry dropper and the ant. Weather was iffy and rained a lot with massive T storms rolling in. They did well early on Island on the ant, then we checked out lizard and picked off a few with a bunch of callibaetis hatching near the inlet but tough to get to without a boat. Matt was getting them on his ant with the giant wing. Also on his larger camel zebra with the flash mixed in. Then we went to dog and picked off a few more and I headed out as a major t storm that turned to hail rolled in.
