Lower Provo River 4-12-2014

Date / Time: Saturday April 12, 2014 12-6pm Location: Lower Provo above campground and then Hoover up and down The Characters: Kory K Weather: Mostly sunny, high clouds high 50s sporadic breeze. Water Temp: Low 40s guess Water Level: 107 cfs release plus Deer Creek Water Clarity/Quality: Slightly greenish but mostly clear Moon Phase: Few days before full Moon Best Techniques: Nymphs, dries decent Best Flies: Sparkle dun #18, Cripple emerger BWO #20, brown bead #20 Fishing: Overall not a great day, so so. I looked at the gauge today (one day later) and see the water was up 10 cfs so don’t know if that was a factor. Also not that many BWOs, just sporadic so either it is tapering off or flow increase or something killed it. Headed down to the river around noon. Lots of people on lower end, but when I got to the top above the campground only one car and they were leaving. Jumped in there and midges were everywhere but no BWOs which actually being this high didn’t surprise me. Walked into the big hole on river left since I had seen some rising on the right before I rigged up. Saw a good fish right in front of me and threw the #18 sparkle dun on him and he ate first cast, stuck and landed a good 17 or so brown. Then worked on the risers on the far bank and they were picky. Got a few to eat after switching to midge cluster but missed and lost most. Seemed like largely smaller fish. A dipshit walked up and sat down right below on the river right bank and rigged so I just bailed and went down to satellite. Didn’t see many fish up except here and there, fished a small brown bead dropper but nada. Decided to head down river. Drove to Hoover and there were quite a few cars but not outrageous. Fished right below parking above fast water and only a few small risers, got a couple on the dropper. Worked down around people and went all the way to Hoover. Saw one fish in little side eddy below Hoover and missed it. Went further down and there were quite a few fish up in the first hole around bend, but mostly smaller. Hatch never really got going. Sporadic bugs and sporadic risers, fair amount of people. Eventually nymphed deep slot above tree hole and hooked a couple of pigs but lost all of them. Landed one decent fish. Got a couple small fish to eat dry after that but not much going on. Headed back up and hopscotched the nymph, but didn’t do much only a few small fish. Eventually got back to where I started and spotted a few but ended up foul hooking a big rainbow so went further up since I didn’t want to end on that. Didn’t hook much on the slightly deeper triple midge rig, so eventually rigged super short with micro brown bead and yong behind it and immediately hooked one. Hooked another giant rainbow right below the mouth, and lost another one broke the rig off in a tree and re-rigged and only hooked one more small fish. Headed out after that.
