**Date / Time:**10/17/09 Afternoon, 10/18/09 All Day, 10/19/09 All Day Location: Salmon River, New York The Characters: Kory Kapaloski, Lee Kapaloski, Dave Severson, Patrick Ross Weather: Partly cloudy, mostly sunny Water Temp: Low 50s Water Level / Tide: Good around 750 release Water Clarity/Quality: Crystal Clear Moon Phase: New Moon Fishing: First three days of a week long trip with my Dad. Drove up Saturday got there around 1, got licensed and headed to the water. Fished Pineville bridge river left first thing on the swing. First pass, foul hooked a salmon and ended up breaking my entire shooting head and tip off. Went back and rerigged with a steelhead 8 weight that was too light but made it work. Dad, no interest except another possible fouled salmon. Headed to another spot ended up on trooper pool made a pass down through on the swing again, no interest, dad kept getting snagged with too heavy tip. Re rigged the nymph and pounded it pretty good for the last 45 minutes of sun but no interest. Day 2: Met up with Dave and Patrick tagged along. We headed to the snagger’s whole first thing as they thought that would be a good spot. All 4 of us on the swing. We fished it hard top to bottom, good feeling fishy water but no takers. Ended up working down into refrigerator hole with dave and put on an egg and tried to tightline with a tip to no avail. Made our way back up and Dad had worked the run over 3 times or so, no interest. Dave was on other side, no interest so we moved on. Headed down to 2A and walked up to a spot dave liked, but a boat was in the bucket. They landed one fish that looked to be a brown, but not sure. Eventually they left, so we stepped in. All four of us through…nada except patrick on a micro bow. Got a bite to eat and hit the staircase. Walked across and up through the sidechannel. All 4 of us down through, with dad watching since goons were thick…nada. Went up to Patrick’s private land and a guy was in the bucket. I crossed and fished river left and it felt and looked good. Kings were all over in the sidechannels. Made a couple of passes for naught. Eventually Patrick moved in on other side and swung through same spot over and over with an egg and said he hooked and lost a steelhead. Dave stepped in behind for nada. Patrick hooked a king that broke him off and that was the day…Nada. Day 3: Dad and I fished solo and headed to DSR. We got kind of a late start around 9 or so. Walked all the way to the meadow and there were dudes in there. Bait pinner said he got nada. Fished through the bus whole and wandered around the sidechannels above the lake. Spotted a few fish here and there and switched to the indicator, but didn’t hook any. Got back up to the meadow and pounded it for nada. Headed upriver and talked to a guy who said he hooked a few in the glide on bait so we decided to head straight there after a stop for bite at the car. Patrick met up with us and we hit the glide. Fished the top left in the little slots and rock pockets for nada but broken rigs. Moved below the tree and got a 16 inch brown. Dad got a small brown on other side. Worked out into he center pockets and eventually hooked what I am sure was a steelhead for a couple of seconds and off. Moved down through and hooked a chromer that skyed into the air and threw the fly (bright pink mega egg). Lot of leaves in the water so fished something that would stand out. Moved down and patrick was in the tailout swinging his egg. Eventually he hooked a fish that went straight upriver that looked fouled. Eventually it came in and was fouled steelhead. I walked back up and moved down through and hit nothing until i got to the tail where patrick was standing and I hooked a big fish for a second and lost it. Dad had moved down so went to find him. He was in the pool in the middle of the river right sidechannel. When we got to him he was all excited saying he had landed the biggest brown of his life at 28 inches…Awesome! He also hooked a steelhead that schooled him and came off. Both on the bright pink mega egg. I fished down in the pool where the sidechannel rejoins the river but nada. Made my way down to the pool below the rapid at the entrance and pounded it as the sun went down for nada. Headed out for the marathon drive to Rhode Island around 6:30…profiled next entry
