Rhode Island: Bonito 8-14-09

Bonito On The Fly!

**Date / Time:**8-14-09 Location: Rhode Island Quonnie to Watch Hill The Characters: Kory Kapaloski, Jeremy Cameron Bonito On The Fly! Weather: Partly cloudy, mostly sunny Water Temp: Mid 60s or so Water Level / Tide: Don’t remember tides Water Clarity/Quality: Clear Moon Phase: Close to new, last quarter Fishing: Drove up early morning, got there around 8:30 Jeremy in water at Quonnie. Threw my shit in and we were off. First thing out saw fish, hooked up it was a bluefish. Went further out and started to see bonito, you could tell since they sky out of the water. They come up and down fast so the birds are often behind them. Conditions were flat calm and glassy and it was awesome to see the fish in that scenario you could watch them pop up and frequently see them zip by. I had several killer shots and immediately hooked up and lost one, hooked another and lost it. This happened several times throughout the morning. We motored around and up toward watch hill and saw some killer blowups with a lot of fish in them. I kept missing shots or hooking fish and losing them. Watched Rhody fly guy hook one in one of the pods. This went on for the remainder of the day and Jeremy ended up hooking one blind on watch hill reef. He also got another one in a pod when I was all jammed up. Finally toward the later afternoon, we were running the beach between watch hill and weekapaug and saw another boat with a guy and his wife fly casting. We came up on them and could see bones busting. I had a couple shots and finally hooked up and stayed connected. Fish ripped into my backing and I ultimately landed it. A sweet fish about 7 or 8 pounds, I was stoked! After that fish, didn’t see a whole lot more. A few here and there but no more hooked. Below is the video. Here is a link to the fish tale I wrote on flies and fins
