Date / Time: Saturday, May 18 & Sunday, May 19 Location: South Fork Ogden River in canyon below Causey Reseroir The Characters: Kory, Tammy & Anna Weather: Overcast, partly cloudy first day 60s and Sunny 70s second day Water Temp: High 40s guess Water Level: Around 130 cfs Water Clarity/Quality: Clear Moon Phase: First quarter two day after Best Flies: Bead Stone Fishing: Headed up for weekend with camper to camp here for first time. Was going to go to Henry’s but camper was getting hitch put on and we didn’t have a lot of time so wanted to go somewhere close. Camped at South Fork Campground #33 it was right on river, great spot. Water looked good, but I didn’t compare flows to when I had been there in the past and it was double what it is when the fishing is good. Caddis were not happening yet and I pounded all the water around our camp first morning with dry dropper and didn’t touch anything. Fished a streamer back down and had a few slash at it, but not eats. Rode bikes into Perception campground and Anna and Tammy played on playground so I went and grabbed my rod to fish the deep pockets right in front and nymph. Hit some good spots, but never hooked any, had a couple fish visibly swing at it and possibly eat but no indicator move and no hookup. Toothless dude came up and told me hooked a pig brown in that pool on a rooster tail and his buddy had been getting them on sculpins and streamers. Threw a streamer around camp at last light without waders and fouled a cutty and had a couple other grabs, had I wadered up and hit it earlier might have been good. Fished the last morning on the dry dropper above camp again and got one small brown on the stone but that was it. Nymphed that hole in campsite above where I had the streamer eats and got the smaller fish, but didn’t touch a fish. Overall tough fishing, water was a little high. Caddis were all over rocks, spotted one salmon fly and kept it for a sample. Tiny midges and sporadic random mayflies coming off but nothing else. Another couple weeks and it will be good. Great place to camp with family though so will be heading back.
