Strawberry River Below Starvation 8-10-2013

Date / Time: 8-10-13. 11:30am-4:30pm Location: Strawberry below starvation, parked at upper access below dam and walked across to just above S curves and fished up. The Characters: Kory and Matt Olson Weather: High stratus clouds, warm not hot low 80s by afternoon. T storms in afternoon here and there, occasional breeze. Water Temp: Upper 50s lower 60s guess. Water Level: 312 CFS. http://water1.cuwcd.com/reservoirs/ResInfo.aspx?res=star Water Clarity/Quality: Clear, but some color from moss and guessing reservoir. Moon Phase: Between New Moon and First Quarter. Bugs: Micro midges, PMDs, Few Sallies, Caddis. Fishing: Drove up leaving SLC around 9:30, got there around 11:30 am. Few PMDs when we got there, no risers fished dropper Matt hooked one on zebra and lost it. Before I even made any casts saw a pig rising in shallow water right above me, threw the 14 PA over him a few times and he munched it. Fish didn’t run, but wouldn’t give his head good battle killer fish in low 20s. Gradually more and more PMDs coming off, some good fish in a shallow gravel area. Matt hooked one on PA that tore straight up river almost to backing turned around came back at him and wrapped him in a log and broke off. I threw PA over a few, but no eats so switched to #18 cripple and got another pig that ripped up and did same thing but I managed to get him unwrapped and landed him. Moved on and got another pig in a pocket/sidechannel that was picky but ate the floating PMD nymph and ripped. Kept working up but not many fish up that we saw so we headed to S curves. Fish were up good there and we stuck several and worked around in there for an hour and a half until they were down. Missed one more above on the way out and headed back. Matt left and I was waiting for Tammy to pick me up to head to LC, he dropped me at hwy 40 bridge. Found no risers there, threw a nymph hooked one immediately on split back but moss hooked upper fly and broke off. Rain storm hit me and Tammy arrived so headed out.
